Class Activity

This is a short activity about mobile phone ringtones. You might need to get special permission to use mobile phones in class.

Think about your mobile phone ringtone. Listen to some of the ring tones in your class.

Why did you chose that particular ringtone?

How often do you change your ringtone?

What do you look for in a ringtone?

What makes you dislike a ringtone?

Do you pay for your ringtone?

Mobile phone ringtones is a very profitable part of the music industry,

estimated to have generated $2 billion during 2003. Many companies hire composers to write original ringtones. If a ringtone contains a pre-existing song, the company must pay royalties to the owner of the song.

Changes in the market.

Since a peak in 2002-2004, the market for ringtones has declined, perhaps because of the software that enables people to create their own ringtones. It’s still an extremely lucrative part of the music industry, but where do you think things will go next? For example, have you noticed that there is now composing/sampling software? What kinds of opportunities could this create for music entrepreneurs?

Assessment Task 4. Compose a mobile phone ringtone.

The ringtone should be no longer than 30 seconds

The ringtone must be original work, but it can sample other pieces of music.

Many phones have a compose function. Check out the online guide to using Nokia Composer. Alternatively, use Sibelius, Garage Band, Ableton or the sound recorder on a computer, and then convert your composition into a ringtone.

This website gives instructions on how to convert recorded sound into a ringtone.

Before you begin composing your ring tone consider your market. You are trying to write something catchy and desirable, that will appeal to students of your age.

What will students look for in a ringtone?

What is the best way of marketing this ringtone?

You may upload their finished ringtones to the school website so

students can buy them, with all profits donated to the music faculty budget or other charity of your choice. A prize will be offered for the most commercially successful ringtone.
