Entrepreneurship: Advertising, Marketing, and the Magic of Music.

This unit will look at how people can make money through music. It will start by looking at the skills students need to develop if they would like to work in music-related industries.

The students will then focus on practical composition skills that can be translated into entrepreneurial activities: composing music for TV and advertising, and writing and selling mobile phone ringtones.

Students will undertake a biographical study on a musical entrepreneur of their choice who has demonstrated the capacity to change, innovate, and keep up with the industry for more than 20 years (Madonna, Bjork Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson, The Beatles).

Throughout this unit students consider the timeless emotional and persuasive effect of music over the human condition. Students critically read stories from ancient civilisations and religions about the magic of music and consider the expressive devices used to create such an effect.
