Design your instrument
Draw a picture of your instrument - include measurements, materials, and work out every thing you need. You may start by copying other successful instruments and then make adjustments (Re-design).
More information: Visit Linsey Pollak's website and check out some of his creations.
The Carrot Clarinet is one that most people like to see!! But he also makes some fantastic other instruments out of Rubber Gloves, Wood, hosepipe and just about anything!!

Tip: Experiment using your imagination first. Draw a couple of different designs.
Tip: Once you are sure of your new design, download the document to the right and make a labelled diagram. Identify:
- what type of instrument you have designed and how it will be played.
- how will you change the sound? and;
- how will the instrument be held?
Make your own instrument
Ask your teacher to purchase the required vegetables with the market. This may need to be done by the Kitchen Team!! So double check the order at lease 1 week in advance
What you need
Funnels
Containers
Table cloths or surfaces
Drills (book with facilities and STEM teams)
Knife
Hosepipe that can be cut
Large Cooking Pot: Because the scraps from your instruments will go into a pot to make soup (Ngon!!)
Assessment: Take Photos of Instruments and Video of you playing and upload to SeeSaw as part of your Journalling.
Tip: Write down the order that you need to do things in order to make your instrument.
Eg, you might need to go to the shop to get a carrot, before you can start chopping and drilling into the carrot. Before all of that you might need to ask someone to take you to the shop?
Vegetable Orchestra Performance
After you have made your instruments see if you can rehearse and perform a song!
Try these lyrics to the tune of We Will Rock You by Queen:
Verse 1.
Hey buddy we’re a band,
make a big noise playing TH School,
we’re gonna write a big hit some day,
we got carrot on our face,
it’s a big disgrace,
slapping that pumkin all over the place.
Chorus
We will, We will, Rock you.
Extension Activites
Can you write another verse or two for your 'We will Rock You Song'?
Can you play your instrument on another song
Assessment and Journaling
Create a music video and take photos of your vegetable instrument!
Participate in a community performance in the lunchroom and video your performance.
