Writing a Composition for Musicians to Understand!

In this task you will use the NoteFlight App to create a melody which is 8 bars in length. You will ask your classmates to perform your composition so don’t make it too tricky.

● You should use C major. Your first note could be C, and your last chord should be C major.

● Aim to use crotchets and quavers in 2/4, 3/4, or 4/4 time.

Add the following to your composition

  1. Copy your melody into parts for some melodic instruments that your classmates can play. Eg. Piano or Xylophone or Boomwackers.

  2. one accelerando and one ritardando.

  3. Vary the dynamics, both overall and for each instrument.

  4. Introducing a pause.

  5. Tempo markings.

  6. Articulation marks such as staccato or tenuto.

  7. Accents.

Optional Extension

  1. Can you add Harmony parts to accompany your melody? Only use the chords C, G, Am or F.

Show your composition to the Teacher. Check:

  1. Your composition has a good shape with a beginning and an ending.

  2. That each instrument has time and space to play in the way the markings ask (e.g. a diminuendo should take place over several chords so the instruments have a chance to get softer bit by bit).

  3. Print your score and give the parts to 4 other students in your class.

Rehearsal

Find four people to form a group. Check that they are clear about what your markings mean and how they will play them(make sure it isn’t too complicated to play). Make a recording of your friends performing your composition with an Ipad or Phone.

Performance: Maestro Time!

You should conduct your classmates to ensure your composition is effective as a performance.

Upload the score and your composition to Google Classroom.
