Hanoi International Schools Music Festival 2022

Welcome to the International Schools Music Festival (ISMF) in Hanoi, Vietnam for 2022. This year our ISMF is an Orchestral and Choral combined schools 2-day workshop with a Sunday afternoon performance with Dong Quang Vinh, one of Vietnam’s premier conductors and David Crowden from Australia.

  • Limit of 20 singers per school chosen based on 'most deserving' students.

  • Orchestra Members nominated by schools after audition.

Day 1. Thursday Workshop 21 January. Venue: UNIS Theatre

Day 2. Friday Workshop 22 January. Venue: UNIS Theatre

----Saturday----- back up for Soloists or small groups as needed ( otherwise rest day - sports tournaments etc.)

Day 3. Sunday 24 January (Sound Checks and Performance). Venue: TBC.

Pre-Camp Rehearsals: Vinh will attend TH School, Concordia and UNIS one day each for a 2-hour workshop a few weeks before the event. Other participating schools may join these workshops.

In Vietnam, Dong Quang Vinh is:

- Conductor and teacher of orchestral conducting of the Vietnam National Academy of Music (VNAM)

- Artistic director and conductor of Hanoi Voices Choir (HVC)

- Director and soloist of the Suc Song Moi Bamboo Ensemble (SSM) and Japanese Bamboo Ensemble Waraku

- Guest conductor of the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet (VNOB) and the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra (VNSO)

In May 2017, Vinh and his two bamboo ensembles were invited to talk and perform on the TEDxBadinh talk.

In January 2018, Vinh was selected by the US government as the only representative from the ASEAN among 18 countries from all around the world to attend the project “promote social change through the arts” - “International Visitor Leadership program” (IVLP) in a 3 week tour in 5 cities and states of the United States of America.

About our Artist in Residence

Dong Quang Vinh is an experienced conductor with years of conducting top orchestras in China and Vietnam. Born to a family of traditional music, he is also a soloist on different types of traditional music instruments and invited to give performances on various international stages since age 12.

In 2004 he was sent by the Vietnam government to study orchestral conducting at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and was awarded the most distinguished student scholarship by the China National Foundation. He obtained the master degree in 2013 with highest scores and returned to Vietnam to serve the home country.

In China, Dong Quang Vinh has been guest conductor of:

- Shanghai City Symphony Orchestra

- Shanghai Conservatory of Music Symphony Orchestra

- Shanghai Conservatory of Music Traditional Orchestra

- Shanghai Chinese Traditional Orchestra

- Zhe Jiang Theatre Chinese Traditional Orchestra

- Hong Kong Chinese Traditional Orchestra etc.

He's conducted numerous Shanghai youth orchestras attending China National competitions for student orchestras and had won a number of 1st prizes.
